Week 11: Food Presentation & Comic

Food Presentation & Comic

This week is the last lesson for Creative Thinking class. We are asked to present our food menu in front of the class. Every group's food menu is so unique and creative.

This is the first group to do the presentation. Their Cafe's name is DIARIEA. They have such a whimsical slogan, that is 'Eat healthy with us, have DIARIEA with us'. Their three main ingredients are milk, cherry and cheese. Their target audience is healthy people. What I like about this group is that they are very creative in making their food menu. They have a chart for healthy level in which customers can choose from. They also have Health Promotion Board sign. That's very smart!

This is the second group to present. Their cafe's name is 'EATLEAD'. Their target audience is athletes. They are very creative in choosing their cafe's name as they make the cafe's name rhymes with the target audience - EATLEAD and Athletes. Their three main ingredients are banana, kit kat and orange.

This is Junk In the Trunk Café. Their target audience is junkies. Their three main ingredients are pocky, lemon and tic tac. The things that I like from this group is that they are very detailed in explaining the process of making all the food in their food menu. They are also very good in advertising their café by giving Hungry Ghost Festival Promotion. People tend to be attracted by promotion.

This is Green Garden Café. Their target audience is kids. Their three main ingredients are bread, kiwi and green tea. The things that I like from this group is that they are very creative in displaying their food menu. As you can see from the two pictures above, they fold the food menu in such a creative way.

This is Ma. Cao's Dessert Café. Their target audience is people who want to gain weight. Their three main ingredients are mango, kit kat and mint candies. The things that I like from this group is that they make all the desserts in the food menu look so mouth-watering.

After all the presentation from every group, we are given a piece of paper for individual work. When our teacher says, "Go!", we are told to only draw a long line which starts from a point in the paper. Then, we need to stop drawing the line at another point in the paper when the teacher says, "Stop!" The teacher goes for two rounds. So, we only have two long lines in total. She also asks us to divide the paper into small square columns. The teacher then exchanges our papers randomly to one another. It turns out that I get Sy's paper.

Next, we are asked to draw comic for our friends whose papers are with us by making use of the random lines in their papers. For my case, I need to make a comic for Sy. So, I decide to create a comic about a little boy who loves fashion and his dream. This is because I know that Sy takes Fashion Design as his course in NAFA.

Since this week is our last lesson, we are asked to take a selfie with our comic's recipient. Three attributes about Sy are:
1. He is very passionate about Fashion Design
2. He is quite a shy person
3. He is fashionable

Then, we are supposed to take another four more selfies with our friends. Here they are:

This is Siew Kei. She is hard-working and diligent. She is also very smart. Siew kei is such a gentle lady.

This is Debbie. She is such a cheerful person. She is confident and very good with English.

This is Yin Ying. She is friendly. She is such a caring girl and very kind person.

This is Huei Hao. He is quite a shy person. He is very diligent. He is also very organised in the works that he does.

She is my cartoonist. So, here is a selfie of us.

Week 10: Food Challenge

Food Challenge

This week is our last lesson to have group work. So, we are given the choice to choose our own group members for this week's group. My members are Siew Kei, Debbie, Yin Ying and Huei Hao. We are asked to create a menu for a specific group of people and we are only given 3 ingredients to do that. All these are done by lucky draw.

Our target audience are dieters. The 3 ingredients are apple, apricot jam and mars bar. We are to use all the 3 ingredients in making appetizer, main course and dessert. We are also asked to create a logo for our cafe.

First, we discuss about our logo. We decide to call our cafe as 'Apple Tree' because one of our main ingredients is apple and tree represents something green which means healthy. Then, we start brainstorming on our logo design.

We also discuss on how we are going to play creatively with the ingredients for the appetizer, main course and dessert. Then we distribute our works.

1. Logo

Huei Hao is in charge of the logo.

Based on our discussion, we decide to draw a tree for the mascot. The stem is made up of human slim body as our target audience are dieters. So this can attract their attentions.

This is our LOGO!!

2. Appetizer

Debbie is in charge of the appetizer.

The name of our appetizer is 'Pomme Dip'. We call it that way because Pomme means apple in french. It consists of apple slices with a chocolate dip and an apricot jam dip.

3. Main course

Siew Kei and I are in charge of the main course. We decide to make our main course as a set meal consists of food and drink. Siew kei handles the drink while I handle the food.

We name our main couse as 'Appridge' set meal. The name 'Appridge' is actually a combination of apple and porridge. Appridge set meal = mashed apple (apple porridge) with apricot jam as the sauce and chocolate sprinkles on top of the sauce + apple juice in a jar with beautiful straw. The food is designed just like a Japanese curry rice in order to make it appetizing.

4. Dessert

Yin ying is in charge of the dessert.

Our dessert is named 'Chockie Chockie'. It consists of apple slices on a chocolate stick that are covered with apricot jam and a chockie fountain to dip the whole apple chocolate stick into.

Lastly, we put prices on our menu for the appetizer($6.90), main course($15.90) and dessert($9.90). We purposely make them a little bit expensive because diet foods are healthy and hard to find:)

So, welcome to 'Apple Tree' and we will be serving you well!

Hope that you will enjoy the food!

Week 9: Ghost Costume Making

Ghost Costume Making

This week, we are grouped into a new group. We are given the task to design a costume that will help us to keep evil monsters away.

These are the materials we use for the costume  making: cellophane papers, garbage bag, masking tape, rope and 2 paper plates.

We need to choose one person from our group to be our model for the costume. After discussion, we decide to let Vicky be our model. Due to limited garbage bag, we have to strategise by choosing the smallest among us and that's Vicky!

Then, we discuss and sketch our costume.

There are also some traits that we must add to the costume in order to make the evil spirits think that our model is one of them and hence we can survive the night and leave SPOOKS Island by sunrise. They are as follows:

1. Only have 3 fingers

We use masking tape to create three monster's fingers.

One of them is for the thumb. The other two are made big enough to fit two fingers into one masking-tape-monster finger.

2. No eyes on face.

For this trait, we decide to make the front part of the costume be applied on the back of Vicky's body. Hence, the back view of Vicky's head and hair will be the face of our monster. So, there is no eyes on the monster's face.

This trait says there is no eyes on the face. So we draw a conclusion that there might be eye on different parts of the monster's body.

We decide to make one of the paper plate given to us to be the eye of the monster. We decorate it with black marker and red pen.

3. Have very long hair.

Vicky's hair is not long enough. Hence, we use rope to make her hair longer.

We tie the rope onto her hair.

4. Body part must contain two unmodified paper plate.

So, we decorate the other paper plate given to us to create disgusting wounds for the monster.

These are the two unmodified paper plates. We place the eye paper plate on the middle part of the body and the wounds paper plate on the other hand of the monster to cover up the five fingers on Vicky's right hand as the monster is supposed to only have 3 fingers.

5. Almost 50% covered with black tar (garbage bag).

We make a dress out of the garbage bag.

Then, for additional decoration, we cut cellophane papers into small rectangles and add them into the body and the arms of the monster to show monster's scales.

This is our final outcome! Our monster!

And here we are!!!:)

Week 8: Storybook Presentation (Part 3) & Paper Tower

Storybook Presentation

Our group presented the storybook in front of the class. We told them about our story. So, below was our completed storybook.

This was the cover page. The title of our storybook was 'Who Did It?'. We chose this title because our story had a suspense plot. We wanted to engage the readers to guess who the culprit was in our story.

This was the first page. It all started with a girl named Siew Kei who came from a 'Wonderous Land' across the sea.

As soon as she arrived in Singapore, she saw a girl eating an ice cream.

She wanted to eat ice cream too but she did not have money. So, she hid behind a potted plant and wept.

Suddenly, a cloud formed above her head and fairy god mother appeared.

Instead of giving her 3 wishes, fairy god mother gave her 3 objects: phone, shoes and watch.

Fairy god mother then led her to 'fountain of wealth'.

After she drank from the 'fountain of wealth', she fell asleep on the 'red chair of fatigue'.

Then she dreamt of her friends from across the sea. Their names were Sy and Hao. Let's see how the story goes!

When she was awake, she realised that she became a ghost.

She tried to recall that she had met 3 suspicious looking people on that day. They were a security guard, a girl with tattoo and a man.

Then she called fairy god mother with her magic phone. Fairy god mother picked up the emergency telephone.

Siew Kei explained the situation. Fairy god mother replied and said that if Siew Kei found out who killed her by 12 midnight, she would come alive again.

The magic watch showed that it was already 12 midnight. So, 'WHO DID IT?'

Paper Tower   After the presentation, we were divided into new groups. Then, we were given a new task. We were to build a freestanding structure made of only paper and were to build it as tall as possible. We couldn't use glue, stickers, or any adhesive but could only use magazine papers given to us.
So, we used only scissors and cutter to help us cut the magazine papers.

First 15 minutes, we discussed about our building strategy. All of us threw in ideas onto the rough paper.

After much consideration, we agreed to choose this building strategy. We were given limited numbers of magazine papers. So, we cut each of them into two. Then, we rolled the magazine papers into tube shapes. To make the tube structure stay, we folded the top and bottom part of the paper and we tucked one side to another side. After all the tube structures were created, we stacked them according to the above building strategy. However, it didn't work well. It could stand but was not stable.

We realised that our building strategy had weak base. So, we made little changes to make it work. We created tube structures in different diameters. Three tubes with larger diameters were put below as the supporting base. Then, two tubes with large diameters were put on the second level. Another two tubes with medium diameters were put on the third level. One tube with smaller diameters were put on the fourth level.

No to forget that on top of every tube, we placed a flat square paper to cover the hole so that another tube could be placed on top of it.

We wanted to design our free standing structure creatively, so we made a roof . We folded the paper into this shape above.

To make the roof slightly taller, we added this 3D-square-shape paper structure on top of the roof. We created it by slotting method.

This was the process of placing the roof on top of the tube on the fourth level. We had to be extra careful not to make the building collapse.

This was how our roof looked like.

After we were done, we had to test our building's stability by poking it a few times.

Yeay! Our tower passed the test. This was because our base was strong enough to support the height of the tower.

This was a picture of us with our tower. We were satisfied with it. It looked like a lighthouse. We were able to build this tower because of our good teamwork. Each of us contributed ideas for the planning and all of us did work for the building of the tower. What I could have done differently for our teamwork was that we really put more effort into the planning process by putting into considerations the stability of the building and the methods in transforming the sketched shape into 3D structure. Hence, we could have saved more time and effort.

Then, I walked around to look at other groups' buildings.

Every group has different methods in building their towers. This group combined tube and prism structures. They mainly used slotting method.

This group had a very unique tower. They also used slotting method. But they didn't use tube structure but other shapes.

This group was very enthusiastic. Their building had collapsed once. So, this was their second trial and it worked well.

In conclusion, I think that the different ways I could have built my tower is to use slotting method for creating the structures. Besides that, I could build more interesting shapes other than tube shape for the tower and play around with the different ways of stacking the structures. There is a way to make my tower taller. Instead of making a roof, I should have create a stick using the paper I use for the roof. Stick would add more height to the tower.
